Earlier One-Off Post: The Eighth 2016 GOP Presidential Debate
Tweet of the Day
@mkhammer did an outstanding job tonight in the eighth GOP Presidential debate. And for once I didn't hear Trump or Cruz knocking moderators— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
@IshYimini has a point about Rubio's attacks on Obama to distance himself from the former first-term senator. + not repeating Quayle on JFK.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
There are diminishing returns to federal regulations. They are like "The Blob", spreading from DC, devouring capital everywhere it touches.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
I was dismayed by the fact that some candidates at the 8th GOP debate,Nobel Peace Prize nominee Trump in particular, endorsed waterboarding.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016

Isn't it time the GOP puts the excesses of the War on Terror (including waterboarding and Gitmo) behind it? They do not reflect US values.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Trump's rationale for universal healthcare is based on phantom people dying in the street nonsense, like claims of Mexico dumping rapists.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Trump isn't aware of EMTALA, passed in 1986, which explicitly forbids the denial of emergency care to indigent or uninsured patients— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
An exchange:Trump's pandering to police officers is nauseating: Saucier v. Katz, the blue wall of silence; how many policemen are indicted, prosecuted?— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
The terrific irony of the whole thing is that Rubio and Obama's positions on immigration were identical until November, 2014.— Chris Newman (@newman_chris) February 7, 2016
Moving on:@newman_chris @AlexNowrasteh This is incontrovertibly and knowingly false. Rubio did vote for SB 744, but had publicly listed 21 concerns.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
I don't have a problem with Chris Christie pointing out Rubio repeated himself. Of course Christie constantly brings up 9/11 and Sandy.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Bernie Madoff and Bernie Sanders operate similar Ponzi schemes; Sanders takes your money at the point of a gun. Watch them burn your money.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
@AlexNowrasteh points out that the risk of terrorist refugees is negligible. Bathtubs are more dangerous. https://t.co/sL4N0tXVax— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Milton Friedman died from a slip in the bathtub; I slipped during a holiday vacation (just banged up my right leg). I bought a mat w/o govt.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Did you notice Trump's bizarre definition of 'conservative'? What's sad is that he was earlier asked the same question on Face the Nation.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Conservatism is an orientation predisposed to existing traditions, institutions and culture & preference for incremental (v radical) change;— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
American conservatism is based on a classically liberal foundation of limited government. In public policy we are wary of unintended effects— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Trump or Sanders' populism is a challenge to the checks and balances of our govt against tyranny as described in Federalist Papers #51.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Let's not forget the bizarre start to debate 8 when Carson didn't seem to know when to go on stage like Obama lost without his teleprompter.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
I'm nauseous:I just saw my first Hillary Clinton ad featuring an endorsement by Eric Holder. As if I needed another reason to oppose Clinton— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 7, 2016
Carson Iowa kerfuffle:"Contrary to false media reports, Dr. Ben Carson is not suspending his presidential campaign";other campaigns did same— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 8, 2016
The Carson campaign lost control of its message;Carson's scapegoating of Cruz was inconsistent and arbitrary; Rubio, Paul also chased voters— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 8, 2016
Barack Obama continues to set records as POTUS--most SCOTUS 9-0 losses, most national debt, most deportations, most renounced citizenships.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 8, 2016
Not only did I have to suffer through 2 Hillary Clinton commercials (on Super Bowl Sunday: is nothing sacred?), but a Bernie Sanders one.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 8, 2016
Congratulations to the Super Bowl 50 Champion Denver BroncosLady Gaga's rendition of the national anthem was incredible--great vocals. I don't know much about her, but as a low-carber, that meatkini!— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 8, 2016
Well, I remember going to the local WalMart when I lived in WV around Super Bowl time last year and found them without chicken wings in stock. I hadn't had chicken wings since my former boss, a married man, decided to have lunch at Hooters years back. It's not that I don't like chicken wings; it has more to do with dieting. But when I read some media account talking about the tradition of watching the Super Bowl over hot wings, I decided to go to my latest WalMart and check availability. No problems. They had plenty in stock. I bought some microwavable buffalo wings, and my word--where have you been all my life? Yeah, I know--most readers may eat them at least once a week.
My next sister and two of her daughters live in Colorado, so I felt I knew which team they were supporting. In fact, my goddaughter and her fiance attended the AFC championship game. Still, I felt that the way Carolina had wiped out the competition, including the NFC championship, I felt my sister's team didn't have a shot. Well, the old saw that a great defense always beats a great offense ran true. (I do think the refs blew a completion call in the first half.) I'm happy for Peyton Manning, setting an all-time record with 200 wins. I think he should retire now with his Cinderella ending at the top of his game; I think Michael Jordan did--and then for some bizarre reason he came out of retirement, which turned out to be a mistake--most tellingly when he blew a dunk in a game to the crowd's laughter. There are aging players, even popular wrestlers who are in a state of denial (a prominent former Green Bay quarterback comes to mind). I always liked the way Ted Williams finished his major league career with his last home run. Yeah, Peyton evaded that question in post-game interviews, but he still has his health and nothing left to prove; I hope that he'll make the right decision.

NH polls are notoriously volatile as Nate Silver (fivethirtyeight.com) recently noted. Apparently Bush had a 20-point lead in the polls before the 1980 primary, and Reagan blew him out by a similar percentage in the vote. Five new NH polls reported by RCP Sunday with Trump leading from 14-23 points, Rubio in second place in 3, once tied with Kasich., Cruz at third or fourth. A couple had Rubio at third, with Kasich or Cruz in second. No doubt these were before last night's debate. Will Trump's supporters turn out? Trump claims his ground game is up from Iowa. But recall the record-setting turnout in Iowa was mostly an anti-Trump vote.
Five NH Dem polls all have Sanders ahead of Clinton from 7 to 23 points.
