Post #6603 M: Weekend Update; Milei vs. the WEF; WSJ Interviews Milei

 Quote of the Day

If we listened to our intellect,
we'd never have a love affair.
We'd never have a friendship.
We'd never go into business,
because we'd be cynical.
Well, that's nonsense.
Ray Bradbury

Quote of the Day

It is not much for its beauty that makes a claim upon men's hearts,
as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanates from old trees,
that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.

 Pandemic Report

The latest CDC weekly summary:

 The latest daily from Worldometer:

The COVID-fall/winter surge remains elevated but thankfully apparently past its peak nationally. Note that your locale may differ.

A few related notes of interest:

Other Notes

After a cloudburst of blog pagevuews early week, rhe rest of the week saw lackluster readership. Twitter/X readership also dragged to a more suspect level--like a long string of over a dozen posts or tweets with under a handful of impressions, leading for me to believe I'm being shadow banned. I mean like just a tenth of my small number of followers on top trends. It's hard to tell what's going on because, one of those tweets got a like from an unfamiliar account, and in the middle of the streak one tweet got a decent number of impressions.

I suspect a hostile actor is  targeting my Internet connections. I had some technical issues with apps and cloud accounts with my paid VPN service. Over the week I had chronic network stability issues. Long story short, my ISP denied  any issue but replaced my router and patch cord. If I still have a problem, they suggested my PC might be experiencing a hardware failure. But soon thereafter it was clear the issue didn't have to do with the replaced components. I started looking for a more recent budget desktop. I tried another VPN setup which had been tricky in the past. After some configuration stability issues, all of a sudden my network connection problems have seemingly gone away, not so much as a hiccup in hours. This doesn't mean the problem is resolved; there could still be failing hardware but I noticed the problems picked up again when I stopped the VPN

As I write, I'm watching the Royal Rumble, the WWE's first PLE since Survivor Series. The women's Rumble match was entertaining. I felt sorry for Chelsea Green who got mercilessly squashed repeatedly before getting tossed out of the ring. Besides the expected return of Naomi, we saw the late return of Liv Morgan. I hate to say it but her intro giggle reminds me of Trish Stratus'. But the one I really enjoyed seeing was the former AEW champion Jade Cargill, who has a distinctively muscular physique, similat to Bianca Belair and Ivy Nile. Bayley won, which I fully expected; I think WWE has been teasing an implosion of Bayley's heel faction, Damage Control, Another faction member holds rhe Smackdown women's title.

 Pandemic Report

The latest weekly stats from CDC:

The latest daily stats from Worldometer:

Well it's difficult to conclude things are back to normal when 1500  Americans are dying from COVID daily almost 4 years into the pandemic. Hospitalizations and deaths renain elevated at near yearlong highs, despite an effective relevant omicron-based booster available. Overall, we've seen overall numbers improve over a second consecutive week. Note that your mileage may vary by location. I think CA and TN, e.g., are in an surge; anecdotally I mentioned last week I got an email from a past provider saying they were reinstating masking and other safety protocols. I've been dealing with an unrelated health issue through another provider since last May. I didn't even notice at first  until the nurse was having to repeat herself that she was masked. Other employees, e.g., registration people, didn't and we patients aren't required but registration routinely asks us to report symptoms, recent travel, etc., and they block off chairs in the waiting room.

Other notes of interest:

CDC data show that only 2 in 5 people have received their flu vaccine so far this season and about 1 in 6 getting the latest vaccine to fight COVID.

  •  COVID-19 vaccination reduces risk of long COVID symptoms
  •  A new medication, simnotrelvir, shows promising symptom relief and quicker recovery for people with mild to moderate COVID infection.

Other Notes

It was a fairly light week of readership  on the blog and Twitter/X. Fewer double-digit pageview daily posts; the special format posts did better but only modestly so. The 15.5 year blog finally crossed the 400K pageview mark although I believe several thousand of those are questionable.

I did some long overdue spring cleaning on my key cosolidated hard drive repository folders, including emails, software, podcasts, digital magazines, etc. In some cases, it's humorous. For example, I used to save Bush's weekly addresses, but never found the time to listen to many of them . I had 8-year old sales and news emails. I had copies of Netscape files and other software products no longer supported or published and/or I never installed. Part of the reason for that it can take hours to clone my files on a new hard drive and/or to the cloud and it doesn't make sense to maintain stuff I rarely if ever use.

As if it wasn't bad enough I recently had a mini-PC die on me, I had one of my redundant external drives go south in less than a year of use. I also got scammed by a cheap cloud computing deal that offered lifetime multi-TB storage. If it sounds too good to be true... To date, I've been unable to upload a single file. I trusted the reseller.. I'm going to protest the charge; neither the vendor or reseller have been responsive to date
