Quote of the Day

Example moves the world more than doctrine.
Henry Miller

From the New Blog

  1. It turns out African leaders are more economically literate than Trump. While Trump is trying to undermine NAFTA, Africa is promoting a free trade continental zone.
  2. Yup. This Internet meme from Being Libertarian is spot on.
  3. It's interesting to see how Rand Paul tries to reconcile his politics coming from a Trump-supporting state. For example, on FNC today, he noted how far Mueller has strayed from his initial mandate.
  4. Foreign visitors boost our tourist businesses, attend our colleges and work in/contribute to our economy. Does this stop if they want/decide to live here permanently, maybe start new, productive businesses?
  5. Trump's "closed borders" are economically illiterate. We have about 5% of the world's population and 6% of land mass. With most global resources and population outside our borders, prosperity requires a free, open market.
  6. Trump's use of "open borders" as a pejorative is deplorable. I'm for "open borders", not an advocate for Berlin-like Walls which allegedly kept out outsiders from joining the East German workers' paradise.
  7. I'm increasingly bothered by Trump's use of the pejorative "illegal aliens". Let's be clear: people aren't "illegal"; their actions may be. I do not sympathize with corrupt federal restrictions barring family reunions or economic transactions.
  8. Trump's ceaseless, tiresome campaign against sanctuary cites is an anti-constitutional attack on federalism. Local police powers are not subject to federal policy preferences but are responsible for public safety.
  9. Trump wanted the US to support Arizona's unconstitutional exclusion of DACA participants from legally operating vehicles in the state. In fact, Arizona's unconstitutional restrictions would violate the 14th Amendment, so Trump has it exactly backwards.
  10. The response to corrupt Trumpism is one of a principled opposition to State vengeance, against State intervention in a market of voluntary transactions, of due process and for equal protection under the law.
  11. What Trump seeks to do is to redefine issues in the context of his faux populism. For example, he wants to kill drug dealers. He thinks opponents will put themselves in the difficult position of defending drug dealers.

Neil Sedaka, "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". Undeniably Neil's signature song and first #1 hit; he would later remake the hit in a slower version a decade later,  hitting the top 10 again (we'll feature that in a few days). The problem I have with the original is the seeming unlikely uptempo melody and arrangement and a smiling performance of a song dealing with a heartbreaking breakup.
