Quote of the Day

Little progress can be made
by merely attempting to repress what is evil;
our great hope lies in developing what is good.
Calvin Coolidge

From the New Blog:

Trump is calling his outgoing chief economic adviser Gary Cohn a "globalist" Trump is like a 2-year-old who repeats a bad word his daddy said. He doesn't know what the hell it means, but he gets a lot of attention when he says it.

The PC police are calling Trump an anti-Semite by using the term "globalisr" in describing departing economic adviser Gary Cohn. Nonsense. Ockham's razor: the simple fact is that Trump is stupid. No need to go beyond that.

Apparently Trump's alt-right minions use the term "globalist" as a pejorative against those of us who have advocated an open economy since the days of Adam Smith. We are not part of some crackpot plutocrat conspiracy.

Open trade is easy to understand. I choose to buy French wine. Trump is like this Chicken Little who accuses me and the French of trying to nuke American wineries and I must pay an extra tax if I choose to drink French wine.

The way that American wineries succeed is not by hiring a lobbyist getting in Trump's ear and telling him the French are engaging in wine dumping and other nefarious practices to drive America out of the wine business, but by putting out the products people will buy.

As if losing sleep over whatever the hell Trump will do next isn't enough, you will lose an hour this weekend to the arbitrary fiat of government.

The strange story of Trump's agreement to meet with North Korea dictator Kim Jong-Un has sent FNC Trump apologists over the top; they would have you believe that this is the result of the dictator's capitulation to Trump's angry threats, sanctions and rhetoric.

North Korean dictators are like a grownup Lucy promising Charlie Brown she will at long last let Charlie Brown kick the football. Whatever happened to Trump's rhetoric we won't talk with terrorists? Whoops!

On FB, a Russian troll uggests Trump's strategy over his unconstitutional tariffs:

He is fighting the labour and production outsourcing to the low labour cost countries. The idea is to close the production cost gap so the employers stop outsourcing and start employing localy

You realize that mercantilists have been spreading that bullshit for centuries --about 90% of job losses have to do with improvements in technology. Trump is simply another corrupt bastard who lusts for power like Putin.

An Alternative Approach to Sustainable Fishing

Inflexible quotas/penalties lead to unintended consequences like fishing boats throwing dead fish overboard before getting to port. What if the same vessel could trade excess catches to other licensed vessels?
