Quote of the Day

When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world,
and takes him boldly by the beard,
he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand,
and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

(A left-fascist commenting on this article). Someone tell me how there’s money for wars, enough money for politicians to spend on needless airplane flights, enough money for million dollar bombs, enough money to house and feed inmates but not enough for kids to have milk at school? We need to get our fucking priorities right
Well, now, aren't you the morally self-superior parasite who thinks taxpayers have a moral obligation to feed other parents' kids? You took a little girl's charitable act and made the alternative morally hazardous political porn. Never mind the poor little kids are going to have to pay over $100T in national debt and unfunded liabilities to subsidize expenditures of Democratic political whores. No, gullible left-fascist , people can afford 45 cents to pay for their children's milk, Assuming an unfit parent is justified in not feeding his or her child, a sacred responsibility, because of assumed poverty

Hey, look: I'm a non-interventionist libertarian. But this is utter bullshit that has been debunked by Snopes and others. First, it's an utter lie that players stayed off the field until 2009. I personally watched scores of games with players on the sidelines before 2009 during the anthem. Just ask retired football players; it's beyond dispute: TV stations have gone back to archives; coaches and former players have said the same.

Second, the actual thing this uninformed person is not getting is that this idea of staying off the field was an accommodation to commercial sponsors for PRIMETIME games--a mere fraction of games. The 2009 rule was more an attempt to provide a more consistent policy.

Third, the NFL began implementing the anthem into its ceremonies around the end of WWII. (Why not at the beginning?) Keep in mind the US maintained conscription policies until near the end of the Vietnam War. So you can't really make a quid pro quo argument, because DoD didn't need to advertise for soldiers. And what about the years between major wars? Did the NFL stop playing the anthem? It was more of a tradition than softening up voters to support war efforts--recall, the banner reflects a defensive war on American soil--not some overseas location.

Fourth, it is true that NFL policy RECOMMENDED players standing during the anthem in its game operations manual but did not MANDATE it.

Finally, yes, the DoD has been paying to recruit young men, and a large percentage of their target audience in a voluntary military happen to watch professional football. Now we might argue the wisdom of a standing military and an inclination to use a fully funded military, but from an operational standpoint, you need to offset natural attrition in maintaining a military.
