The Real Threat to Free Speech is Conformism

Political Potpourri

Two major polls released yesterday. CNN nationally has Trump at 39, 21 over Cruz, with Rubio and Carson for the bronze. A big difference with the recent Quinniapiac having Cruz within 4 of Trump. More interesting, Gravis has Trump in NH up only by 6 over Rubio, followed closely by Kasich and Christie. Gravis in Iowa has Trump and Cruz in a dead heat at 31. Particularly interesting about the NH result is the Outsiders accounted for only about a third of the vote. Granted, we are still another 6 weeks or so away from votes being cast. but it's very plausible that Trump could lose both Iowa and NH. I think if and when Trump loses an actual primary, the whole dynamics of the race change as they did for Huckabee and Santorum in the earlier campaigns. I still find Trump polls like the CNN one very misleading. Trump is all about Trump; people are more motivated by policies than personalities. I find it hard to believe that middle class voters feel a billionaire has their back. I'm still waiting for a GOP candidate to turn the populist argument on its head against Trump--heaven knows Clinton and Sanders will have no problem doing that.

(George Will). If you look beyond Donald Trump’s comprehensive unpleasantness — is there a disagreeable human trait he does not have? — you might see this: He is a fundamentally sad figure
I'm getting ticked off all the idiot trolls arguing the GOP has not been a purely conservative party, etc. There is nothing conservative about pandering to populists. Why do you think that there were speed bumps from the strongman concept that Trump implicitly represents--I can do X,Y,Z. Not political principle. There is NOTHING conservative about messing with the freedom to hire who you want, from family reunification, etc. Trump is not, and never has been conservative. He is quite willing to use powers that are illegal or unconstitutional; it's a power trip.. Don't you remember how the French revolution led to tne rise of Bonaparte?

I'm just annoyed about trolls who don't even bother reading the article and just decide to focus on the blurb. George Will never equated the GOP with conservatives. The GOP had a conservative wing and a progressive wing. When TR bolted from the GOP in 1912, it was the conservative base that kept the GOP alive and to return to power after Wilson's tenure. We had the Old Right movement, including Robert Taft which rose in response to FDR's flavor of fascism. There was, of course, the Rockefeller liberal/moderate wing which competed against Goldwater/Reagan. But what George is saying is that Trump is sort of a populist RINO on steroids. No conservatives, including the pro-liberty, Tea Party wing including me, will support Trump, period. We won't vote for Clinton either.
