Miscellany: 12/03/15

Quote of the Day
I came to America because of the great, great freedom
which I heard existed in this country.
I made a mistake in selecting America as a land of freedom,
a mistake I cannot repair in the balance of my lifetime.

Brandon Craig Short story is that my mom worked at a crisis pregnancy center and one pregnant lady said to her "I'll consider adoption if you will adopt the baby". Of course she said yes and they couldn't stop adopting. (My brother and I are bio kids but the youngest 10 are adopted). Each one has an awesome story.

Political Potpourri

There's a new PPP (D) NH GOP Presidential poll with Trump hitting 27 for I think the third consecutive poll, 14 over Cruz, closely followed by Rubio, Christie, Carson, and Kasich, each clumping near 10%. The big news here is Christie reaching 10%, after weeks of struggling near the 1%'s, no doubt boosted by a major newspaper endorsement (not to mention a recent column by George Will). This makes the upcoming CNN debate (Dec. 15, NV) important for momentum heading into the new year.

(Reason). Rand Paul has introduced a bill, dubbed the "Stop Extremists Coming Under Refugee Entry (SECURE) Act, that would temporarily ban refugees from 32 Muslim-majority countries, as well as the Palestinian territories and North Korea, from entering the US.
This is pushing-on-a-string opportunistic political posturing. As a fellow libertarian-conservative, he should know that knee-jerk public policy such as the Democrats ritually calling for restrictions on self-defense over any prominent violent incident is unwise. As others have noted, nearly 1 million refugees have entered the country in recent years with no related incidents of domestic terrorism. (The Boston Marathon terrorists entered on tourist visas and were granted asylum.)

There is only one circumstance where I could see a bill like this introduced by a pragmatic libertarian--to stave off a more radical bill, e.g., prohibiting refugee entry. I see no evidence of this whatsoever, plus in the unlikely event it could survive a Senate filibuster, Obama would veto it and he has enough votes to sustain it. So all of this is political theater, and as a Rand Paul supporter, I'm deeply disappointed.

A number of felons will tell you imprisonment is better than execution. A number of famous accomplished people were orphaned or abandoned. Who gave this asshole power of life or death based on arbitrary criteria?
