Miscellany: 11/11/15

Quote of the Day
Most of us miss out on life's big prizes.
The Pulitzer. The Nobel. Oscars. Tonys. Emmys.
But we're all eligible for life's small pleasures.
A pat on the back. A kiss behind the ear. A four-pound bass.
A full moon. An empty parking space. A crackling fire. A great meal.
A glorious sunset. Hot soup. Cold beer.

The Fourth GOP Presidential Debate

Political Potpourri

The latest from RealClearPolitics is Carson nipping Trump by 2 points in Arizona and Rubio in third place, just 8 points out of the lead, and breaking away from the pack. I'm mildly surprised in the sense I thought Trump's demagoguery on immigration might play especially well in Arizona. Note that 2 points is not exactly statistically significant. Drudge continues to plug a rolling Reuters poll that shows Trump with maybe a 5-point lead over Carson. I don't know enough about the Reuters poll to understand why RCP is not including it. I do not doubt that the Trump cultists are highly motivated and will dominate convenience Internet polls. But it's clear that Trump has been fading and is in  a dog fight with Carson. This does not mean that he's done; there is talk that he's getting ready to launch his political ads. Now personally I don't think he benefits from them, because he entered the race with a near universal name recognition; I think people either love or hate Trump. I think that he needs to be very careful in using negative ads; they could backfire on him.

(Stossel). Sometimes I like Donald Trump. He makes me laugh when he mocks reporters' stupid questions. https://reason.com/archives/2015/11/11/my-trump-problem
It's not just that Trump has run his companies into the ground at the expense of stakeholders and creditors FOUR TIMES, FOUR TIMES, FOUR TIMES, FOUR TIMES, but he is unqualified, grossly incompetent, lacks public sector experience, is unprincipled, is an economic illiterate, ill-tempered, and a corrupt bastard, openly buying political favors. The idea that a billionaire can convince millions of delusional, retarded cultists to support his attempts to buy the Presidency through fascist economic nationalism is a searing indictment against democracy. No more bread and circuses for the cultists!

(Libertarian Catholic). While many will laugh at rituals of the Church as anachronistic relics, more and more people are finding that there are real physiological benefits to it. Science, as it has so often in the past, again proves the Church right.
I just love, love, love the old rituals--votive candles, holy water fonts, blessing with incense, chants and sung Masses, etc.

(Reason). Just when you think that Donald J. Trump has hit a new low, he goes even lower — this time during last night’s debate when he touted Dwight Eisenhower’s Operation Wetback as a model for dealing with America’s undocumented population.
Scapegoating people having to work around an essentially broken down temporary work permit process is unconscionable. Prohibitions are bad public policy, period, whether we are talking about alcohol, drugs, or migrant labor. The restrictions on immigration since WWI (or in the case of Asian immigrants, even earlier) are unconscionable and un-American betrayals of the American dream. Immigration, whether high- or low-skilled, contributes win-win to the American economy. We should not be build boondoggle walls when what we need is a full restoration of nondiscriminatory liberalized immigration which was a cornerstone of this country's becoming the biggest economy in world history.

(Reason). Sorry, Marco Rubio, but Rand Paul is not a "committed isolationist."
Rand Paul is not an isolationist; he is fully committed to free trade (but not a fan of mercantilistic trade pacts, like TPP. Committing our troops to nation building halfway around the world, serving as the world's unloved policeman, and expanding the drone wars is not only unconstitutional but feeds anti-Americanism and all but invites blowback as a result for unconscionable collateral damage destroying the lives and property of innocent civilians.
