Miscellany: 7/22/15

Quote of the Day
Only solitary men know the full joys of friendship.
Others have their family;
but to a solitary and an exile,
his friends are everything.
Willa Cather

Rant of the Day
He offers a barking carnival act that can be best described as ‘Trumpism,’...A toxic mix of demagoguery, mean-spiritedness and nonsense that will lead the Republican Party to perdition if pursued...Let no one be mistaken,Donald Trump’s candidacy is a cancer on conservatism, and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised, and discarded...I, for one, will not be silent when a candidate for the high office of the president runs under the Republican banner by targeting millions of Hispanics, and our veterans, with mean-spirited vitriol...Trump “couldn’t have endured for five minutes what John McCain endured for five and a half years... When a candidate under the Republican banner would abandon the tradition of magnanimous leadership of the presidency, when he would seek to demonize millions of citizens, when he would stoop to attack POWs for being captured, I can only ask as Senator Welch did of Senator McCarthy: ‘Have you no sense of decency, sir?’ - Rick Perry, former TX Gov., Presidential candidate

(Jeffrey Tucker). Looking back at the postwar history of the "right" in the United States, from the early 1950s to the present, a pattern stands out. The conservatives have a special loathing for libertarians, and they slit our throats whenever possible: purging us from editorial boards, cutting off funding, smearing the liberal tradition, spreading frenzied imaginings that the libertarians are ushering in satanism and debauchery and risking national security, and so on. It's been going on for many decades. They hate us more than they hate the left or the state. And this is despite how it has been the libertarians who have been the font of robust ideas all these years. The conservatives, in contrast, have not offered much in the way of intellectual contribution at all except vitriol against the left and a longing for times gone by.
Quite frankly, this rant is a load of crap. Talk about hypocritical shallow thinking--there's a majority of libertarian know-nothings who argue the Dem leftist fascists are no different than the GOP (who exactly ushered in Ponzi scheme entitlements, centralized social and healthcare programs?) It's the leftist portals that celebrate the conversions of libertarians to authoritarian leftists. American conservatism is based on a classical libertarian tradition. It's conservatives, not progressives, bringing up the most innovative public policies of recent years, whether we are talking about privatization, devolving authority and funding to the states and locals, It's fusionists like the Pauls and Amash who are leading the way on sentencing reform, an end to government spying, reining in Presidential power grabs, etc.

(National Review). A "cancer on conservatism."
Rick Perry nailed it. Trumpism is relevant only for the morally corrupt, feeble-minded, gullible nativist loser minions of an incompetent self-promoting celebrity buffoon who, at last count, has 4 bankruptcies to his name.

(Cato Institute). "This is what happens in a world without markets for water."
Yeah, let's not worry about pricing someone out of a market for something that without which they will DIE. Conservation is the only solution. Making it so the poor can't get water certainly is not.
Economic illiterate fascists don't get it. Prices are the mechanism by which you attract competitive suppliers. If and when you manipute the market with artificially low prices, you discourage competition, and you inevitably end up with shortages and arbitrage opportunities in black markets

(Reason). New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will not rest until he has reached "true economic justice." Which, alas, will likely mean everyone being equally poor.
 If the Fascist really wanted "economic justice", he would repeal all state compensation laws, he would eliminate occuparional licensing restrictions, he qould dramatically cut state spending and taxes. Capitalism, not failed socialist/fascist policies, lifts all boats.
Let's hope that means 15 dollars an hour for all government employees and politicians
$15 an hour is too many money to spend on political whores and parasitic bureaucrats. Government doesn't provide value; it steals from the productive, and the whores and parasites take their cut of the loot.
