(National Review). Government equals socialism — to those with no idea what socialism is
This piece is undoubtedly the worst I've seen from Cooke. One could make the argument that an authoritarian State need not be socialist, but when the fastest growing, most unsustainable 70% of our federal budget is based on individual benefits, not the legitimate ends of government being common defense and protection of individual rights. There is something wrong when Cooke defensively responds to the fascist Michael Moore's ridicule of a pro-liberty meme. I disagree with almost everything Cooke says must be provided by government If there is a legitimate need the competitive marketplace will provide--better and faster without the intervention of political whores and their crony interests. Cooke also ignores the underlying constructs of socialism, e.g., "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need".

(IPI). "Unions representing city employees should not be bound by Chicago’s campaign financing law limiting annual contributions to $1,500 per candidate, the Board of Ethics ruled this week."
Campaign laws are unconstitutional restrictions on political speech, but this constitutes a violation of the rule of law. Why not allow the corrupt crony unions to continue looting the taxpayer? Board of "ethics"? More like the "Board of Corruption".

(Libertarian Catholic). How We Got Rights So Wrong
The only two true "human rights," if such a thing even exists, are the right of disassociation and the right to an opinion.
Rubbish. LC is correct (right to life), not to mention the right of property, including one's body and what one produces. Liberty includes the right to transact.
My take on the same subject, which is way more complex than most give credit to:
Interesting take. Rights must be equally respected under rule of law, and force is morally justifiable only in the protection of fundamental rights. Force must be commensurate in nature. For example, it's one thing to defend direct attack on one's territory; it's another thing to justify proactive attacks on non-aggressors. The idea that censorship of others is justifiable in place of tolerance because one's emotional security is threatened by a contrary opinion is ludicrous.

Aretha Franklin, "Respect". Her signature and only #1 solo hit on the Hot 100. Aretha's pipes, the brass, the backup harmonies--a glorious, immortal pop standard.
