Of course, these days you can buy an Amazon Fire Tablet 8 for about $50, and I bought a Dell Chromebook for just over twice that. I can still recall buying my first PC desktop clone for nearly $3K, and my last vastly superior laptop cost under $500. My last low-end but full-featured Samsung Android phone cost under $100, and my monthly service bill is a fraction of what I was paying 20 years ago for a fraction of current services. I'm sure others have similar experiences.
I (a former USAF brat, the oldest of 7) went to a small residential Catholic college in San Antonio in the 1970's; I paid my own way mostly on scholarship and work-study, graduating with a $1600 loan to pay off.
[One of my old Navy buddies posted some engineer's post basically apologizing to women over his profession's sexist sins which he never had to endure.]
Apparently he's recently taken his gender studies course. I've had talented female math, science and MIS professors. One of my nieces-in-law has a Master's in engineering.
What I can tell you is I had to leave academia as a professor in a tough economy, and a lot of positions were earmarked specifically for female candidates. So much for my white male privilege.
[I'm not sure whether my brother-in-law or sister commented (they share his account), but they were irate I shared on my timeline the blurb of a FEE post debunking the myth that public school teachers are under-compensated. Two of their daughters have taught in public schools, although the older one got laid off in Colorado during the recession and has mostly struggled since then. She is currently a substitute teacher in Ohio.]
Ask me if I give a damn whether any relatives have any problems with hearing the TRUTH. If you had the integrity to actually READ the article, you'll see there are certain differences among states. (If you think my criticisms of public school teachers are bad, wait until you read what I've said about civil servants or the USPS. I've blogged on these several times; you need to deal with the fact I don't always agree with you or other relatives.) I have a pet peeve with all the retarded politicians who kiss teacher union asses. You have asshole teacher unions in Illinois where many teachers with seniority never get laid off (it's the ones like Claire who get laid off--and they make the least money) and retire to a million-plus pension. Illinois property taxes are skyrocketing; pension outlays have literally quintupled since 2000; it's affecting city services. These bastards feel entitled; fuck that.
I have a pet peeve about politically correct and WRONG stereotypes. I put up with more shit teaching college than you'll ever know--and unlike K-12 teachers in many/most states, none of my state positions ever had a pension path. I used to put in an average of over 70 hours a week; not all professors did--especially if and when you get tenure. My undergrad students would typically make more than I did within 3 years, if that--with a mere fraction of my knowledge and skills. I didn't become a professor with the idea of becoming rich. I put up with shit you have no clue goes on in universities. To give one small example, I caught Asian graduate students cheating on assignments. When I attempted to discipline them, I had senior faculty members and administrators coming after me, accusing me of attempting to sabotage their foreign student program.
If my public school niece or nephew can't deal with the fact laid out in the article, that's their problem. These authors did not attack my relatives; they are simply pointing out the facts. I don't make excuses for my performance; I had to deal with a lot of prejudices against academics when I had to leave academia, unable to find another teaching job in a recession. IT recruiters were the worst; they treated my 8 years in academia as if I were unemployed, and my prior experiences they thought were obsolete and likely degraded. Life isn't fair. Deal with it.
The Impeached One Donald J. Trump is a CORRUPT POLITICIAN, and definitely a very sick man. He has not paid the price, yet, for what he has done to our Country!— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 26, 2020
I thought we got rid of the royal "we" at the end of the Revolutionary War. The Impeached One alone is responsible for abusing his power and obstructing Congress. The GAO has also pointed out Trump's halt of Ukraine aid, around the time of the Zelensky phone call, was illegal. https://t.co/xo9QoiRmDX— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 26, 2020
One of my most popular tweets ever: over 4740 impressions and counting, high retweets and likes.
It's amusing that progressives have just now discovered Tom Cotton. The guy tried to make a name for himself trying to cut LEGAL immigration to the US. He's one of the truly toxic first-term GOP senators, like Josh Hawley. I left the GOP over Trump and these guys.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 26, 2020
"Tom Cotton"
I made mocking reference to Pompeo's gaffe, trying to shame a PBS reporter who may have pointed to Belarus vs. Ukraine on the map; Pompeo corrected her, identifying Bangladesh--in an entirely different global region. Trump isn't the only dumbass!https://t.co/q9BLSj1OI1— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 26, 2020
I actually once voted for this SOB. He's now a compensated adviser for the Trump Propaganda Network (FNC).— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
1. Trump violated the law by freezing Ukrainian aid (GAO).
2. Trump released the aid under political pressure.
3. DoD certified compliance.https://t.co/aMxvs19CAv
4. Trump in his phone call called the notoriously corrupt fired Shokin a "very good" man. Note the IMF was withholding $40B of loans/aid over Shokin et al. So Trump's corruption rationale is total BS.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
5. There was no legitimate reason for Trump to discuss Biden in the call.
6. Bongino's excuse that ask the victim (Zelensky) whether he was being extorted is patently absurd. Is a POW going to admit to being mistreated? Or a kidnapping victim with a gun against her head? Zelensky has to work with the fact of POTUS Trump. He'll say what Trump wants.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
7. Ukraine knew of Trump's aid freeze around the time of the Trump call with Zelensky.https://t.co/wHacJdYstp— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
Political Cartoon of the Day (h/t YAL). Remember when Republicans railed against Obama's trillion dollar deficits? Trump and a GOP-controlled Senate are whistling 'don't worry; be happy' as we achieve a trillion-dollar deficit in a robust economy. pic.twitter.com/InuZSSoRs4— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
You are a goddamn liar. You specifically pointed out that you expected a favor for US support. You went out of your way to make the setup, pointing out Ukraine is isolated and US gets nothing in return for US aid. You then want him to talk to Barr and your personal bitch Giuliani— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
This seems like weasel logic to me. He attended a July 10 meeting with Sondland, Hill, Vindman and Ukraine officials where an investigation into the Bidens was specifically raised, and Hill testified Bolton opposed your quid pro quo. So arguing Bolton is simply selling books: BS.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
In fact, Bolton refused to testify at the House hearings, where he could have earned massive publicity for his upcoming book. Not to mention the fact just a few weeks ago you were praising as a patriot who would vindicate you.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
#ILeftTheGOP when Trump clinched the Republican nomination in 2016. I had left the Democrats years earlier when they marginalized their Southern conservative base & will never rejoin them. The GOP alienated me by abandoning the Tea Party movement, free trade, & immigration.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
It is unconscionable to require a wealth test for immigration. It's comparable to a wealth test for voting. My great-grandparents may not have been allowed to immigrate from Canada. Existing laws already require a minimum residency for new citizens to qualify. #SCOTUS— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
Nope. You have a reading comprehension problem. The Zelensky phone call transcript is definitive. The Impeached One-in-Chief specifically wanted Zelensky to talk to Barr and his personal bitch Giuliani. He specifically asked for a favor. We know he placed an illegal hold on aid.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
The Impeached One is a lying bastard. Bolton did not testify in the House under White House direction. The Senate is trying the case; Bolton is a material witness. It is their obligation to hear relevant evidence.https://t.co/cBQyeLsx3O— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 27, 2020
There was a time you once championed liberty. Now you've sold your soul for a corrupt wannabe authoritarian plutocrat. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
Trump wants to use the Senate trial for the political purpose of attacking his chief political rival, Biden, just like he tried to extort Ukraine to do the same. The Impeached One revealed himself to be a dumbass when he called the notoriously corrupt Shokin "very good".— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
There was a time I thought you had integrity, Rand Paul. Now you're nothing but another partisan bastard, pandering for a corrupt plutocrat. John Bolton was asked to testify, but the White House objected. If Bolton wanted to sell books, he could have done it better at impeachment— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
To The Impeached One: why don't you testify in the trial so we can add perjury to the impeachment count?— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
What makes Rand Paul so disingenuous here is the fact Fiona Hill had testified that Bolton had specifically disavowed the Trump Biden investigation quid pro, saying he wanted no part of Trump's drug deal. What's he going to say: Hill is Bolton's PR agent?https://t.co/vsl8BM2x1w— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
Unintended Consequences 101 (h/t Cato Institute). Before ObamaCare and its birth control mandate, b.c. prices were in a downtrend. Oh my God, Thomas Aquinas is trending (feast day)! My faith in Twitter is restored! I remember being serving as altar boy at daily mass for the AFB chaplain during high school. The chaplain gifted me with his set of "Summa Theologica" on graduation.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
"St Thomas Aquinas"
One of my favorite nerdy pastimes in college was to review Aquinas' rigorously specified counterarguments in the Summa and try to figure out how he would respond to them. If and when I succeeded, it was with a great sense of achievement.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
Let's be clear: there's no such thing as a "free lunch". Government mandates are bad public policy. The free market already has incentives to compete for workers; Henry Ford offered market-leading pay and benefits without labor unions or government. #PaidLeaveforAll— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe absolutely shreds former colleague defense attorney Dershowitz's absurd contention that POTUS abuse of power is not an impeachable offense. https://t.co/lHQxnMRLKB— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
OK, Lindsey Graham's disingenuous discussion of classified settings to review Bolton's book manuscript is knowable BS to anyone who has ever held a clearance. Vetting of relevant publications is SOP. Moreover, it is illegal to use classification to hide wrongdoing.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
"classified"
Remember when Pompeo corrected that NPR reporter, thinking she had identified Bangladesh vs. probably Belarus (north of Ukraine)? Trump just praised Pompeo for his interaction. I've heard of being an easy grader, but the average fourth-grader would have got an F in geography.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
There was a time Republicans loved and trusted John Bolton, a neo-con who served in high-profile roles for two Republican Presidents. This SCIF rubbish is an attempt to imply that Bolton, in his upcoming book, is publishing classified information, a felony. Under the bus?— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
SCIF
"Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gain." Trump's attempt to extort the Ukraine government, using US aid into prosecuting his chief political rival Joe Biden served his own personal political interest, not the US government interest.https://t.co/W1gXiU2tV0— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
I wonder how many seconds it will take Trump to disparage John Kelly for backing Bolton's assertion of Trump's quid pro quo on Ukraine? Should we start a hashtag game on Trump's new nickname for Kelly? I'll go with "Leaky Kelly".— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 28, 2020
Donald Trump, can you show us where Ukraine is on a map? #StupidQuestionsForWitnesses— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020
Trump infamously claimed that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his minions would still support him. Well, Trump extorted Ukraine using aid signed into law for his personal benefit, and he's sure all GOP senators will vote to acquit him, despite the call transcript.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020
The Trumpkins got all excited today over (quickly denied) rumors Feinstein might vote to acquit Trump. Could you imagine how many times Trump would brag about a "bipartisan acquittal"? We have the Zelensky transcript; no reasonable person in good conscience can acquit.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020

But this obsession over witnesses is inconsequential. Everyone knows what Trump did. The Dems need 20 Republicans to vote to convict.
#MittOrGetOffThePot
Every Senate trial vote to date has been party-line. Even if 4 Republicans vote for witnesses, it doesn't mean they'll end up voting to convict. And you need 5 times that to convict.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020

It's sad to see my favorite Congressman Amash's Congressional career likely coming to an end this fall. Even longtime pro-liberty allies (e.g., FreedomWorks) are pushing other 2020 priorities. Amash has become the new Ron Paul. But his Trump stance hurts.https://t.co/rekNjKfLp9— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020
Note I'm fully supportive of Amash's principled stand on Trump's impeachment. And third-party bids sometimes succeed, e.g., Alaska, MN, VT, ME. The problem is that he doesn't have a lot of constituents like me (I live in MD), and he'll face 2 well-funded opponents.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020
The Clown-in-Chief doesn't mean, of course, the people who had direct knowledge of his Zelensky phone call or his illegal hold on Ukraine aid. He wants to deflect attention from his corruption and weaponize the witness process, e.g., shift blame to the Bidens, the whistleblower. https://t.co/ZjDbF77LwD— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020

First of all, Trump is the economically-illiterate moron who killed our participation in TPP--which included all 3 countries (and 9 others). TPP was, by definition, a bigger deal.
Second, this pact does NOT liberalize the 3 nations' trade. https://t.co/vdQZrBV8i3
Why don't you take a class in Econ 101, you political hack! Protectionist trade is NOT free trade. Free trade is not like the BS oxymoron "fair trade" economic-illiterate corrupt politicians like The Impeached One hype but is really a power grab by the State.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 29, 2020

I'm sure George III thought his policies were in the public interest.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 30, 2020
There's ZERO chance that the identity of the patriotic whistleblower has any bearing on The Impeached One's unconstitutional abuse of power. We already know about Trump's corruption from his own abridged, incomplete call transcript.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 30, 2020
Yes. You have the transcript of the Zelensky phone call and the GAO report that Trump illegally halted Ukraine aid. The witnesses would provide corroborating evidence, but any acquittal would be purely political and against the interests of justice.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 30, 2020
Oh, LMAO. I thought The Impeached One was arguing about his discretion in shaking down Zelensky. On second thought, he's probably talking about his "authority" to engage in non-defensive military operations including his assassination of an Iranian leader. He almost started a war— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 30, 2020
The fact the Trump Administration had been plotting to assassinate Soleimani for 18 months but not inside Iran really exposes the opportunistic nature of Trump's war crime assassination of a foreign leader of a country with which we were not at war.https://t.co/uWyRTiW7ST— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) January 30, 2020

I think why The Impeached One is upset at Mike Bloomberg running for the Dem nomination is that Bloomberg is doing something he couldn't do. No, you are un-American. The freedom of anonymous speech is guaranteed by the Constitution. The progressives have lost their mind. No, Barry Obama was not the "greatest" POTUS. He was the worst in my lifetime, and that's saying a lot because all of them have been really shitty. Let us recall— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 1, 2020
- undeclared wars (Libya), kill lists
- GSA
- IRS
- Solyndra
- DACA
- $10T debt
Not even The Impeached One is THIS dirty. San Francisco's "Mr. Clean" is implicated in a porta-potty scandal even as record levels of human waste fill the streets.https://t.co/zjvuMo3KMm— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 1, 2020
I'm so tired of the Trumpkins' bitching about the alleged Obama Administration's 2016 intervention against the Trump campaign. The Trump campaign did not lose a single state over that. I'm actually surprised Trump didn't sponsor Hillary Clinton's nomination, his only way to win.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 1, 2020
Are you kidding me? Do you know what the fuck "neo-lib" means? There hasn't been a free market Democrat since Grover Cleveland left the White House.— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 1, 2020

#NotEveryoneKnowsThisBut the "good man" Trump praised in his Zelensky phone call was the corrupt top prosecutor Shokin. Also, Trump's actions to freeze Ukraine aid in an attempt to force Ukraine to launch an investigation of Biden were not enabled by Congress and illegal (GAO).— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 2, 2020
You mean this trend is not about The Impeached One's favorite former FNC host?— Ronald Guillemette (@raguillem) February 2, 2020
