Miscellany: 8/07/15

Quote of the Day
You may have a fresh start any moment you choose,
for this thing that we call 'failure' is not the falling down,
but the staying down.

The GOP Presidential Debate and Liberty

Facebook Corner

(Rand Paul 2016). "Rand Paul had called Trump out for 'buying politicians' just before he admitted to the utility of the practice. This goes along with Trump’s explanations of his bankruptcies and how they helped him while vendors he worked with got screwed. At least we know where he stands on the intersection of cronyism and politics; and it’s not pretty."
It's worse being the "paid off" politician, don't ya think? He's bringing to light and exposing corrupt politicians. Again, I'm on Donald Trump's Side.
Anyone who thinks a self-serving billionaire trying to buy the Presidency and whose only political experience is trying to buy corrupt political whores is going to be elected is beyond a gullible delusional minion

(National Review). "Donald Trump is incapable of being embarrassed; we’ll see how long that holds true of his admirers." -- Kevin D. Williamson
And none of them are as successful as trump so they can take their uneducated opinions and continue to bama brainwashed idiots, you all want to know the best thing about trump?he doesnt have lobbyist corrupt politician experience but when he takes the seat his radar will be on and all that corrupt lobbyist money trading for votes on bad bills, may just stop
Donald "Four Bankruptcies" Trump is a schoolboy bully right-fascist crazy old uncle trying to buy the Presidency who not only lacks policies beyond bumper stickers but has no principles beyond his vanity. He appeals mostly to gullible immigrant derangement syndrome morons who are un-American at at their core.

(Reason). U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, the self-described democratic socialist currently running for the Democratic presidential nomination, says he has "serious problems" with car service company Uber because it's "unregulated."
Uber is regulated by the marketplace, consumer's and driver's perceptions of the quality of the service transaction--instead of some political whore.

(FEE). Bernie wants to scapegoat immigrants for the failures of wage controls and the welfare state.
I found this piece interesting. Not the tone from Bernie I've heard before.

But this young man (the author) lost my attention with this comment....l

"You know what would help reduce youth unemployment? Abolishing the minimum wage that prices unskilled young workers out of labor market."

That's right young man. Spoken like a true upper-middle class white boy.

Tell me Mr. Bier, did you have to support yourself through your last year of high school and college on minimum wage jobs? Why do I not think so.

First, let's point out the OP is an economic illiterate. As a retailer, you have the ability to change prices, e.g., if your sales are soft, you can try to increase sales by cutting prices. But suppose the government declares you couldn't cut prices (e.g., like brokerage fees in the past): this doesn't solve your sales problem. Now if you're a shopkeeper, you could apply the same argument: do you know how hard it is to make a decent living at these prices? Why, we need to raise the minimum prices... Do you think raising prices will help the shopkeeper unable to clear his shelves at current prices?

By taking away the only power that laborers have--their ability to negotiate their own pay, you take away their ability to make a living. Maybe that foot in the door is their path to the 98% of jobs that pay above the minimum wage.

Your feeble, number-out-your-ass attempt to decide what makes for a "fair" wage or price is irrelevant. The market and your productivity decide wages; if your skills, knowledge, and experience were worth $15/hour, you would already be making $15/hour.

Musical Interlude: My Favorite Vocalists

Kenny Rogers, "Eyes That See in the Dark". Yeah, this is another BeeGees' original and backing vocalists, one I don't think I heard at the time.
