Miscellany: 2/12/14

Quote of the Day

If you wish in this world to advance,
your merits you're bound to enhance;
You must stir it and stump it, and
blow your own trumpet,
or trust me,
you haven't a chance.

Idiotic Foreign Leaders: Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra

Hillary Clinton awaits her chance to argue unlike her male predecessors, women are naturally superior leaders. Now I will agree I've had my fair share of abysmal male (and female) bosses, but we are now seeing some train wrecks in the form of  Argentinian President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner whom I've blasted in multiple commentaries and now the Thai prime minister.

Thailand is a leading exporter of rice; they tried to manipulate the rice market by aggressively purchasing inventory. Elementary fact of supply and demand: you increase price, and it attracts suppliers. They now own a significant percent of annual aggregate demand, and rumor has it some of the inventory is starting to spoil. The PM won political backing of rice farmers, but if the government dumped its holdings of rice, prices would drop, a political impossibility. Some estimates suggest that over 5% of the Thai budget will be consumed shoring up the failing grain bet. When will people ever learn government intervention in the market never works?

Yes, the same guy who let unused buses get flooded while people died unevacuated in the aftermath of Katrina and was reelected for his "leadership" becomes I believe my first nomination for this year's Jackass of the Year competition.
