Rand Paul's Response to Obama's Address on Syria

The always perceptive Nick Gillespie gives a pithy review of the address. I particularly object to Obama's outrageous reference to "American exceptionalism". Extending the Monroe Doctrine to the rest of the world is not what de Tocqueville had in mind. A salient concept is the rule of law, and Obama has refused to abide by his enumerated responsibilities; he believes that he is entitled to use military power for non-defensive, unauthorized purposes, he picks and chooses to enforce only the laws he personally agrees with, and he uses executive orders to work around Congress. Obama, in defiance of international law, has asserted the right to serve as prosecutor, judge, and jury of other heads of state. We do not have a mandate to serve as the world's policeman and/or impose our national standards on other countries.
