Ronald A Guillemette There can be no dispute that Trump's reference to the Bidens was self-serving and political in nature. From an ethical standpoint, Trump would have to recuse himself from any discussion of the Bidens. The use of diplomatic authority could only be legitimate from a national interest, not a personal interest. Some of the trolls responding below are trying to argue extortion for political self-interest is standard operating procedure; that's rubbish.

Last year, the U.S. asked South Korea for a hefty 50% increase in financial support to cover some of the costs of basing 28,000 troops on South Korean territory before settling on a $925 million, one-year deal that marked an 8.2% increase from the previous year. President Trump, evidently dissatisfied by this sum, upped the ante this year and is demanding $5 billion—a 500% increase.
Alliances should not be sacrosanct, but requesting 500 percent more from South Korea isn't a smart strategic move.

(My Dad served in both conflicts.) Thousands of Americans lost their lives or were injured in unnecessary and counterproductive endeavors.
