Miscellany: 8/15/11

Quote of the Day

Justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong.
Theodore Roosevelt

The Iowa GOP Presidential Debate: Additional Comments

  • The Debt Ceiling Compromise. We knew Michele Bachmann refused to vote for the compromise; the only agreement she could support would require the unlikely capitulation by Senate Democrats and the President. The Democrats know spending cuts are politically unpopular, no matter how many polls pay lip service to fiscal discipline. Newt Gingrich railed against a super committee as essentially an abdication of their responsibilities as legislators and Romney rejected it as the President's dog food. This was a compromise. It includes triggers and all-or-nothing cuts. The issue I have is not with criticisms of the plan but their lack of a constructive alternative.
  • Attacks on the Media. I particularly didn't like Gingrich going after the media during the debate because they asked about his catastrophic campaign losses. He took it to the media--from Fox News--with palpable contempt for gotcha journalism. When you take into account Obama 3 years ago claimed that his administrative experience was superior to Palin's since he operated a national campaign, this was clearly a reasonable question. If you can't manage a campaign, how do you run a country? It's a legitimate issue, gotcha or not.
