The Meltdown of the Robert E. Lee Meltdown
Again, I sometimes present alternative positions. The moderators fully buy into the propaganda the war was over preserving chattel slavery and Lee was the leader of the "rebellion". This is all rubbish. Familiar readers know that Lincoln himself noted there was no constitutional authority to outlaw slavery in the South and did not oppose the Corwin amendment perpetuating it. This is not to suggest slavery was not important to the Southern economy, but as I've previously noted, not all slave states joined the Confederacy. The Confederacy, in talks aimed at winning European recognition, put slavery on the table. It had more to do with a perceived imbalance of power in the Union. But Lincoln's war was not a "rebellion" but in fact unconstitutional, Lincoln having no constitutionally-mandated state authorization for introduction of federal troops into the states. Lee was motivated by defending his home state of Virginia, not by conquest of the North.
The lead moderator implicitly ranted against people like me. I tweeted against the meltdown of a piece of art which they didn't own. I thought it was intolerance, an un-American action, which totally ignores the spirit of reconciliation in the aftermath of the war. I also wanted to point out the anti-Lee bigots conveniently ignore his contributions before the war (e.g., Mexico), and Lee promoted reconciliation and reunification after the war. The moderator would accuse me of "whitewashing" Lee. McClanahan would point out war widows and other survivors saved their pennies for years in a brutal economy to recognize their lost ones.
