Miscellany: 10/02/13

Quote of the Day
Rely on the ordinary virtues that intelligent, balanced human beings have relied on for centuries:
  • common sense,
  • thrift,
  • realistic expectations,
  • patience, and
  • perseverance.

Facebook Corner

From the Bastiat Institute group:

Politicians are scrambling to prove their importance before most people realize the reality of the situation: they just aren't.
David Y. Mosby Jr. One of my liberal friends posted a meme last night where they used the fact that the current Congress has passed fewer laws than any other recent session of Congress as a bad thing. My only response was excitement that they've taken fewer actions to gum up the works yet sadness that it appears they are being more efficient at creating problems.

Group JOTY Nomination: The Shutdown Democrats (Congress and White House)

This is my first group nomination since the unconscionable anti-taxpayer Wisconsin State Senate Democrat walkout attempt to preempt long-overdue public employee collective bargaining reform. The Dem political hacks in Washington have managed to collectivize everything, including incivility:
President Obama called Republicans “reckless and irresponsible,” casting the Grand Old Party in the role of villain. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, referred to Republicans as “anarchists,” and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, deemed Republicans “legislative arsonists".
And Simon does a good job delivering political advice, a theme I've repeatedly stressed on the blog:
Insults have hidden risks because people don’t always equate aggressive behavior with authority. Roger L. Simon, founder of Pajamas Media, has suggested that Republicans counter Democratic acrimony with a Ronald Reagan-style “charm offensive” to win over disaffected voters.
Classic Example of How "Progressive" Government Impedes Far More Efficient, Effective Private Sector Alternatives
