The First Among Equals

JOTY Nominee: Kathleen Kane, Former PA Attorney General

This is about a story I covered a few months back in the blog and promised a follow-up. The story is actually a couple of weeks old. Kathleen Kane had been a rising Dem star, the first elected Dem AG in the wake of the Sandusky tragedy. Fina, a former Philly prosecutor (including the Sandusky investigation), was a target of Kane for allegedly slowing down the ultimately successful prosecution of Sandusky. Kane believes that Fina was being behind the story suggesting that Kane had attempted to intervene in a sting targeting Philly Dem lawmakers. Among other things, Kane aggressively pursued alleged porn email scandal among public officials, including Fina, and leaked details from secret grand jury records in an attempt to embarrass Fina; she then lied about the disclosure. The 9 counts (including perjury, conspiracy and obstruction of justice) against Kane (related to the grand jury leak) led to convictions. Kane, who had continued to serve despite a suspended law license, resigned shortly after conviction last month.
