Politicization of the Tiller Murder

One of the biggest smears around is the deliberate systematic attempt by euphemistically-named "pro-choice" forces to link standalone vigilante activities, like the murder of Dr. George Tiller yesterday allegedly by Scott Roeder, to pro-life/anti-abortion "conspiracies".  This is particularly sensitive after a controversial April Homeland Security report, which Secretary Napolitano later insisted had not gone through official channels, circulated last April, warning of possible domestic terrorist activities from the ranks of returning war veterans and anti-abortionists. The fact of the matter is that it had been almost 11 years since a murder of an abortionist (Dr. Slepian) and not a single one during the pro-life Bush Administration, a period which saw over a million elective abortions a year. The conspiracy smear is further reinforced by a knee-jerk reaction from Attorney General Eric Holder, stepping up protection of abortionists and abortion mills.

Smears and Biased Reporting by the Liberal Mass Media

The fact that the smears are already in motion is exemplified by fellow late-term abortionist Dr. Hern, whom said :
Dr. Tiller's assassination is not the lone and inexplicable action of one deranged killer. This was a political assassination in a historic pattern of anti-abortion political violence. It was terrorism.
It is not surprising that NBC, in this evening's news program would attempt to draw an implied link between television conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly, whom has occasionally discussed Dr. Tiller on his prime time cable news program, and the murder. They, of course, conveniently "forget" to mention that the FBI in 1995-96 had targeted Scott Roeder as a member of the anti-government Freeman group and whom was arrested by the Topeka police in 1996 for storing bomb components in his car trunk. His former wife and family believe that he has mental health problems (which he disputes) and pointed out he had had a mental evaluation done in the mid-1990's.

The liberal mass media "forgot" to present the public statement yesterday issued by the Catholic bishops of Kansas: (The Catholic Church has always regarded abortion as immoral.)

We, the four Catholic Bishops of the Dioceses of Kansas, unequivocally condemn the murder of Dr. George Tiller that occurred in Wichita earlier today. The Catholic Church believes that every human life is sacred. The murder of a human being is the gravest of crimes and is an intrinsic evil. Such an act of violence against human life is a contradiction of the most fundamental principle of the Pro-Life movement. The fact that this attack occurred in a church, a place of prayer and worship, only adds to the horror of this terrible crime. We prayerfully commend Dr. George Tiller to the mercy of God and we pray for comfort and consolation for his family and friends.

The liberal mass media also "forgot" to report universal condemnations of the Tiller murder from pro-life groups. A partial list of pro-life groups condemning the Tiller murder include: Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, 40 Days For Life, Operation Rescue, Center for Bio Ethical Reform, American Life League, Focus on the Family, Women Influencing the Nation, Campaign Life Coalition, Kansas Coalition for Life, Family Research Council, The Christian Anti-Defamation League, Kansas Family Policy Council, Susan B. Anthony List, Priests For Life, Kansans For Life, Stand True, National Right to Life, CatholicVote.org, Kelowna Right to Life, and Real Women of BC.

Tiller Background

Dr. Tiller was a key supporter of nominal Catholic Kansas Governor and Obama Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.  Dr. Tiller was acquitted in March of 19 misdemeanor counts of illegal late-term abortions under Kansas law. (Kansas requires the certification of two financially and legally independent doctors to agree that a medically-validated late-term abortion is necessary for the health of the mother.) The reader is left to his or her own conclusion as to whether this might have been a case of jury nullification: The indisputable facts are that the misdemeanor charges were brought by a pro-choice Attorney General and involved the consent of a second doctor (Kristin Neuhaus) whose income was wholly dependent on the Tiller abortion mill (well, except some limited income she received as a laser hair technician).

[I should note that the pro-life community has a different explanation of the trial; their perception is that the pro-choice Attorney General dropped the original felony charges filed by the prior Attorney General and all but threw the case, presenting a single hostile witness (Neuhaus), offering few rebuttals to opposing defense attorney arguments (including the assertion that the state had to resort to technicalities because of  "weak evidence" of their overall case--similar to prosecuting Al Capone on tax evasion or Martha Stewart on obstruction of justice (versus insider trading)). It is claimed that Neuhaus didn't even personally see some of the patients she signed off on, and she never made the initial diagnosis. Pro-life forces claim that the closing arguments were based less on proactive prosecution than "found money"--Dr. Tiller's own self-incriminating slips of the tongue: e.g., "When she [Neuhaus] was working for me – correction, when she was providing consultations for the patient ..." and "When someone new [Neuhaus] is going to join your organization ..." We leave the jury to live with their consciences.]

In fact, Dr. Tiller claimed that his clinic had performed over 60,000 late-term procedures. There is also some anecdotal evidence (e.g., from former employees) that Dr. Tiller was attempting to reclassify some third-term pregnancies as second-term, which are not subject to the same restrictions. Allegations have been made that Dr. Tiller fraudulently signed off on sham justifications to justify third-term abortions, say, classifying a pregnant woman's complaint of not being able to attend an entertainment event as "severe impairment of a major bodily function" and that Dr. Tiller had botched certain abortions resulting in injury or death to the pregnant women.

It should be noted that after the March acquittal of Tiller, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts announced it had filed an 11-count petition last December, separate from the criminal trial, to revoke his medical license:
Violations alleged include performing an abortion on a fetus that was viable without having a documented referral from another physician not legally or financially affiliated with him; unprofessional or dishonorable conduct or professional incompetency; and commitment of acts likely to deceive, defraud or harm the public.
Concluding Remarks

I have no doubt that the pro-choice forces are trying to make Dr. Tiller's murder a martyrdom. But let's not forget the ones whom, unlike Dr. Tiller, do not have their day in court because our legal system has arbitrarily and without "empathy" defined away their rights. There are thousands, even millions of babies with a developed nervous system and brain, able to feel pain, whom will never have the same opportunities we, whom have gone through the same stage of development (but for the grace of God...), have had to live, to work, to be happy, and to love.
